Curriculum

The Cambridge Early Years curriculum:

  • follows a holistic approach that focuses on the whole child and connects their development with the world and people around them.
  • is built around four key areas of early childhood development:
  • develops knowledge, understanding and skills through a spiral approach, by revisiting and engaging with topics and skills in more depth at each stage.
  • helps learners to meet internationally established milestones for early development. Although children develop at different rates, the curriculum provides a structure for teaching and learning that will help you to monitor and support each child’s progress.
  • supports a bilingual or multilingual approach for learners with a home language other than English, as well as those with different experiences of English
  • prepares learners to easily transition into Cambridge Primary, or the next stage in their education.
  • content is split into six curriculum areas to guide you and support progress.

Curriculum areas

Our six curriculum areas help you to guide and support progress across all areas of development.

Communication and literacy

Speaking, listening, reading and writing are crucial to children’s early development. Showing children the importance of language through fun activities and encouraging them to engage with a wide range of texts helps to ignite a lifelong curiosity for learning.

Creative expression

Creative expression allows children to communicate their ideas and develop their imagination through art and design, music, dance and drama. This important area brings together skills and cognitive processes from across the whole curriculum.

Mathematics

At an early age, it’s important to help children recognise how mathematics impacts everyday life. Through games and activities, we can introduce children to mathematical language, thinking and concepts that they will need when they start their primary education.

Physical development

Our curriculum encourages children to develop movement skills through play, helping them to develop positive attitudes towards exercise and laying the foundations for healthy, active lives.

Personal, social and emotional development

This area is central to children’s lives. It underpins their wellbeing and attainment in all other areas of their learning. This area helps them to develop social learning and friendships, regulate their emotional responses and respond to the needs of others, and develop self-esteem and confidence.

Understanding the world

This area of the curriculum encourages children’s natural curiosity as they explore the world around them. It lays foundations for a range of different subjects in primary education and beyond, including science, digital literacy, computing and humanities.

Curriculum

Wherever in the world your students want to go, help them get there with Cambridge IGCSE.

We created Cambridge IGCSE more than 30 years ago. Today, it’s the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. Not only is it truly international – it gives students more options than any other international qualification. That means more subjects to choose from, more ways to learn and more ways to succeed.

The Cambridge IGCSE curriculum offers a variety of routes for learners with a wide range of abilities, including those whose first language is not English.

We help schools build a programme around their specific needs. Starting from a foundation of core subjects, it is easy to add breadth and cross-curricular perspectives. Encouraging learners to engage with a variety of subjects, and make connections between them, is fundamental to our approach.

For schools, Cambridge IGCSE offers a flexible and stimulating curriculum, supported with excellent resources and training.

For learners, Cambridge IGCSE helps improve performance by developing skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving. It is the perfect springboard to advanced study.

There are over 70 subjects available at Cambridge IGCSE, including 30 languages, and schools can offer them in any combination. Cambridge IGCSE develops learner knowledge, understanding and skills in:

  • Subject content
  • Applying knowledge and understanding to new as well as familiar situations
  • Intellectual enquiry
  • Flexibility and responsiveness to change
  • Working and communicating in English
  • Influencing outcomes
  • Cultural awareness.

Schools worldwide have been involved in the development of Cambridge IGCSE. The syllabuses are international in outlook, but retain a local relevance. They have been created specifically for an international student body and avoid cultural bias.

What is the difference between IGCSE Core and IGCSE Extended?

To take into account differing abilities, there is a choice between Core and Extended curriculum papers in some subjects.

The Core curriculum is within the ability range of a large majority of students. It provides a full overview of the subject and is targeted at students expected to achieve grades C to G.

The Extended curriculum has been designed for the more academically able. It is targeted at those expected to achieve grades A* to E.

Cambridge O Level curriculum

Cambridge O Level is an internationally recognised qualification equivalent to Cambridge IGCSE and UK GCSE. Cambridge O Level provides learners with excellent preparation for academic progression to Cambridge Advanced as well as other progression routes.

We designed Cambridge O Level for an international audience. It is sensitive to the needs of different countries and for learners whose first language may not be English. This is acknowledged during the assessment process.

In some countries, schools use Cambridge O Level as an international alternative or addition to the local government’s examination.

A broad curriculum

The Cambridge O Level curriculum enables teaching to be placed in a localised context, making it relevant wherever you teach it. You can choose from more than 40 subjects in any combination.

The Cambridge O Level curriculum emphasises broad and balanced study across a wide range of subjects. It develops learners’ skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving and is structured so they build practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

Cambridge O Levels develop learner knowledge, understanding and skills in:

  • subject content
  • applying knowledge and understanding to familiar and new situations
  • intellectual enquiry
  • flexibility and responsiveness to change
  • working and communicating in English
  • influencing outcomes
  • cultural awareness.

Because Cambridge O Level is compatible with other curricula, you can adapt the programme to suit your context, culture and ethos. We update the curriculum regularly to ensure it stays relevant to learners’ needs.

Cambridge ICE curriculum

The Cambridge IGCSE subjects are grouped into five curriculum areas:

  • Group I: Languages
  • Group II: Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Group III: Sciences
  • Group IV: Mathematics
  • Group V: Professional and Creative

Learners must take two different languages from Group I, and one subject from each of Groups II, III, IV and V. The seventh subject can be taken from any of the five subject groups.

The subjects available are listed below. Please note that not all subjects are available in both the June and November series.

Environmental Management (0680) can count as either a Group II or a Group III subject, and Co-ordinated Sciences (Double Award) (0654) counts as two subjects. Global Perspectives (0457) can be taken as a qualifying subject in either Group II or Group V. The subject cannot be used to satisfy the criteria for both subject groups.

Curriculum

We help schools to build a curriculum that brings success for learners. Our syllabuses prepare learners for university study, which is why universities worldwide value and recognise Cambridge International AS & A Level qualifications.

Cambridge International AS & A Level develops learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills in:

  • in-depth subject content
  • independent thinking
  • applying knowledge and understanding to new as well as familiar situations
  • handling and evaluating different types of information source
  • thinking logically and presenting ordered and coherent arguments
  • making judgements, recommendations and decisions
  • presenting reasoned explanations, understanding implications and communicating them logically and clearly
  • working and communicating in English.

We offer a choice of 55 subjects and schools can offer them in almost any combination. This flexibility means schools can build an individualised curriculum, and learners can choose to specialise in a particular subject area or study a range of subjects.

Cambridge International A Level is typically a two-year course, and Cambridge International AS Level is typically one year. Some subjects can be started as a Cambridge International AS Level and extended to a Cambridge International A Level. Find out more about the different assessment options.

Important notice for schools teaching Cambridge Pre-U

In November 2019 we announced that we will be withdrawing Cambridge Pre-U. The last examinations for the majority of subjects were in June 2023, with a resit available in June 2024. No teaching of Cambridge Pre-U syllabuses should be started for new students in September 2023.

Examinations for Latin, Classical Greek, Psychology, Russian and Italian are no longer available. Only resit candidates can be entered to take the exams in June 2024 for remaining syllabuses. New candidates will not be eligible to enter.

Cambridge Pre-U is available in 24 Principal Subjects. Each Principal Subject is a two-year programme of study with exams at the end. Short Courses (typically one-year programmes) are also available in some subjects.

We developed Cambridge Pre-U with input from universities and higher education. All syllabuses develop in-depth subject knowledge and skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, team working, independent learning and effective communication.

Schools can enrich their curriculum by offering Cambridge Pre-U Global Perspectives and Research (GPR). This is taught as two successive one-year courses: Global Perspectives develops research and thinking skills during the first year, preparing students for the extended project in the second year (the Research Report). Learners can achieve the Cambridge Pre-U Diploma by taking Cambridge Pre-U GPR with three Cambridge Pre-U Principal Subjects (one or two can be substituted for A Levels).

Flexibility is a key feature of Cambridge Pre-U. Students can choose any combination of subjects, and can combine Cambridge Pre-U with A Level qualifications.

Schools tell us that Cambridge Pre-U offers genuinely interesting syllabuses, and is stimulating for both teachers and learners.

Educational aims of Cambridge Pre-U

Cambridge Pre-U is underpinned by a clear set of educational aims:

  • Encouraging the development of well-informed, open and independent-minded individuals
  • Promoting deep understanding through subject specialisation, with a depth and rigour appropriate to progression to higher education
  • Helping learners to acquire specific skills of problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, team-working, independent learning and effective communication
  • Recognising the wide range of individual talents and interests
  • Promoting an international outlook and cross-cultural awareness.

Cambridge AICE Diploma curriculum

The Cambridge AICE Diploma is made up of individual Cambridge International AS & A Levels, which are widely recognised by universities and employers around. Students can be confident that their qualifications will be understood and valued throughout their education and career, in their home country and internationally.

By demanding knowledge from three different subject groups, plus the core compulsory subject, Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives & Research, the Cambridge AICE Diploma provides a broad curriculum with a balance of maths and science, languages, arts and humanities, and interdisciplinary subjects. It maintains flexibility and choice by allowing students to choose subjects at different levels.

Core

To achieve the Diploma, all learners will need to study and pass the revised Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives & Research (9239). This skills-based course challenges learners to think critically, analyse evidence and compare perspectives. The learning is assessed through a team project and presentation as well as a written examination.

Subjects

There are over 50 Cambridge International AS and A Level subjects to choose from across four subject groups:

  • Group 1: Mathematics and Sciences
  • Group 2: Languages
  • Group 3: Arts and Humanities
  • Group 4: Interdisciplinary subjects (optional

Learners must achieve at least one credit from each of Groups 1, 2 and 3. A maximum of two credits can count from Group 4, which is optional.
